Condoms

Condoms are a type of birth control which is made from a thin layer of latex which creates a physical barrier between sexual partners.

They capture the sperm, so it can’t reach the egg and cause pregnancy. Condoms are also the only form of birth control which can help prevent both pregnancy and STIs.

There are two types of condoms to be aware of, the most common being the external condom and the other being the internal condom (also known as the femidom or female condom).

External Condoms

External condoms can be worn over the penis (or a sex toy) to capture semen so it doesn’t touch or enter your partner.

When used correctly, they are 98% effective at stopping you getting pregnant.

Condoms are easy to use and can even become part of foreplay (before sex).

A new condom must be used each time you have sex and before the packet’s expiry date. They come in different sizes, materials and designs to suit your needs and desires.

As they are a physical barrier between you and your partner, they are the most effective way at preventing STIs. They can be used in any form of sexual activity including vaginal, oral, anal and even on sex toys such as dildos and vibrators.

Internal Condoms

Internal condoms are worn inside the vagina to provide a physical barrier and to stop semen from entering the womb.
When used properly, they are 95% effective at preventing pregnancy.
After sex, each condom should be removed carefully to make sure no semen escapes. A new one must be used after each sexual activity.
Like external condoms, they can be used during foreplay and can create that physical barrier which helps stop the spread of STIs.
