STI Monthly Spotlight: Chlamydia and how to prevent it

What People Don’t Know About Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK, especially among young people under 25. But what many don’t realise is just how quiet it can be. Around 70% of women and 50% of men with chlamydia don’t experience any symptoms at all, making it easy to pass on without knowing.

That’s why regular testing is so important. The good news? It’s easy to test and treat.

What Causes Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It spreads through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex and even through sharing sex toys that haven’t been cleaned or covered with a new condom.

You can catch it from someone who has no idea they’re infected – which is why testing regularly is part of looking after your health and the health of your partners or new partners.

What Are the Symptoms?

Many people won’t notice any symptoms, but if they do appear, they might include:

For women:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sex or when peeing
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Bleeding between periods or after sex

For men:

  • Discharge from the penis
  • Pain or burning when peeing
  • Pain or swelling in the testicles

If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious health problems like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) leading tofertility issues, or long-term pain. That’s why testing and treatment are key, even if you feel fine.

How Is It Treated?

Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics. Most people will be prescribed a short course of tablets, and symptoms (if there were any) usually clear up within a week or two.

Your sexual partners will need testing and possible treatment.

Testing is Free, Easy, and Private

You don’t need to visit a clinic to get tested. If you live in Essex, you can order a free STI self-testing kit online and do it in the comfort of your own home. It’s quick, easy, and completely confidential.
